McLeod Ganj travel guide covering the best places to visit, ideal seasons, food, stay options, how to reach from Indore, itinerary, and TravelTech trip options.
The story behind McLeod Ganj is more interesting than the postcard.
McLeod Ganj wasn't always the Tibetan cultural centre travellers know today.
The upper Dharamshala area developed under British rule, and McLeod Ganj itself was named after Sir Donald Friell McLeod, a British administrator associated with Punjab. Then history took a dramatic turn in 1959. After the Dalai Lama fled Tibet and reached India, Tibetan refugees began settling around Dharamshala. The Central Tibetan Administration was subsequently moved to Dharamshala, transforming this relatively quiet hill settlement into an important centre of Tibetan life, Buddhism, and culture.
That history is still visible when you walk through McLeod Ganj. Prayer flags hang above busy streets, monks walk past cafés filled with backpackers, Tibetan handicrafts sit beside modern souvenir shops, and the Dhauladhar mountains rise behind it all. The result isn't simply a hill station. It is a place where several histories are occupying the same narrow mountain roads.
McLeod Ganj sits at around 2,082 meters and is popularly known as “Little Lhasa." The Tibetan influence is particularly strong around the Tsuglagkhang complex and Namgyal Monastery.
And that's exactly why a McLeod Ganj trip feels different from a standard Himachal sightseeing holiday. You come for the mountains, but you end up spending just as much time noticing the people, food, monasteries, and little streets.

Top Places to Visit in McLeod Ganj
1. Tsuglagkhang Complex & Dalai Lama Temple
This is the cultural heart of McLeod Ganj.
The complex includes the main temple, prayer spaces, and the Namgyal Monastery, and it is closely associated with the Dalai Lama and the Tibetan community in exile. Even when there isn't a major teaching or public event taking place, the atmosphere is noticeably quieter than the surrounding market.
Give yourself time here. Don't treat it like a ten-minute photo stop.
2. Namgyal Monastery
Namgyal Monastery has an unusual history: its original monastery was established in Tibet and was later relocated to McLeod Ganj following the Tibetan uprising of 1959.
Today it remains an important centre for the study and practice of Tibetan Buddhism. The sound of monks chanting, prayer wheels turning, and the constant movement of visitors give the place a completely different rhythm from the cafés outside.
3. Bhagsunag Temple & Bhagsu Waterfall
Bhagsunag combines mythology and an easy mountain walk.
According to local tradition, the temple is connected with a legend involving King Bhagsu and the serpent deity Nag. From the temple area, a walking route leads towards Bhagsu Waterfall.
The waterfall is particularly lively during the monsoon when the stream is in full flow, although July–September also means wetter trails and more unpredictable mountain weather.
If you're visiting outside the monsoon, don't expect a massive waterfall. The walk, cafés, and surrounding landscape are part of the experience too.
4. Dharamkot
Dharamkot sits uphill from McLeod Ganj and feels noticeably slower.
The village has become popular with international travellers, long-stay visitors, yoga practitioners, and people looking for a quieter mountain base. It is also one of the starting areas for the Triund trek.
If McLeod Ganj feels too busy after sunset, Dharamkot is where you go for the opposite mood.
5. Triund
Triund is the big adventure option around McLeod Ganj.
The trek climbs through oak and deodar forests before opening into a broad ridge with views across the Kangra Valley and towards the Dhauladhar range. Himachal Tourism places Triund at about 2,875 meters, with the trail beginning around McLeod Ganj.
It is often described as an easy-to-moderate trek, but don't confuse that with "effortless." Mountain weather changes quickly, and the final sections can be tiring.
For a group trip, Triund works especially well when the group is comfortable with a full day of walking.
6. St. John in the Wilderness Church
This is one of the reminders that Dharamshala has a much older colonial layer beneath its present-day Tibetan identity.
The church stands among tall deodar trees and has a quiet, almost detached atmosphere. It makes sense to combine it with Dharamshala sightseeing rather than treating it as a separate destination.
7. Naddi & Dal Lake
Naddi is the place to go when the objective is simply to sit down and look at the mountains.
Dal Lake, surrounded by deodar trees, is another peaceful stop around Upper Dharamshala. It is less about ticking off attractions and more about slowing the itinerary down.
That matters in McLeod Ganj. Trying to squeeze every viewpoint into one day defeats half the reason people come here.
8. Norbulingka Institute
A little outside McLeod Ganj, Norbulingka is worth adding if you're interested in Tibetan art and craftsmanship rather than only mountain views.
The institute was founded in 1995 to preserve Tibetan arts, crafts, and culture, and its landscaped setting makes it a calmer cultural stop away from the crowded central market.

When should you choose a TravelTech group trip?
TravelTech's currently published Himachal group calendar shows repeated departures concentrated from October through March, including multiple Manali–Kasol departures across October, November, December, January, February, and March. So if you're looking specifically for the kind of season in which TravelTech's existing Himachal group operations are most visibly active, October–March is the practical window to watch.
For a dedicated McLeod Ganj group departure, dates and routing should be confirmed with the TravelTech team rather than assumed from another Himachal itinerary.
What to Eat in McLeod Ganj
You don't come to McLeod Ganj and eat only North Indian food. That would be a missed opportunity.
Try:
Momos—steamed or fried, with spicy chutney.
Thukpa—hot noodle soup that makes particular sense on a cold mountain evening.
Tingmo—soft Tibetan steamed bread, usually eaten with savory preparations.
Shapta—a Tibetan-style meat preparation for non-vegetarian travellers.
Tibetan butter tea—salty rather than sweet, so don't order it expecting ordinary chai.
Siddu—a traditional Himachali steamed wheat preparation, often served with ghee or butter.
Himachali dham-style food—worth trying if you want something beyond the Tibetan side of the destination.
Momos and Tibetan-style food are particularly easy to find around McLeod Ganj, while Himachal Tourism also lists dishes such as thukpa, butter tea and siddu among the state's regional food traditions.
Where to Stay in McLeod Ganj
Your ideal area depends more on your travel style than your budget.
Luxury Stay
Choose a quality hotel or resort around Dharamshala, Naddi, or the quieter Upper Dharamshala belt if you want mountain views, larger rooms, and a more relaxed stay.
This works well for families and honeymooners who don't want to be directly inside the busiest market lanes.
Boutique Stay
For cafés, walking trails, and a more intimate mountain atmosphere, look around Dharamkot and Upper McLeod Ganj.
Boutique homestays and smaller properties fit the destination better than generic city-style hotels.
Budget Stay
If you're travelling solo or with friends, Central McLeod Ganj gives you easy access to cafés, markets, and local transport.
For college groups and younger travellers, budget hotels and hostels can also make sense—but check the exact walking distance before booking. “Five minutes from McLeod Ganj” can mean something very different on a steep mountain road.
TravelTech Sample McLeod Ganj Itinerary
There is currently no dedicated live McLeod Ganj package listed by TravelTech, so this is a realistic sample route, not a claim that this exact McLeod Ganj itinerary is currently being sold.
It follows the operational style visible in TravelTech's active Himachal trips: group departure, overnight movement where practical, hotel check-in, full-day sightseeing, optional activities, and a return journey.
Day 1 — Indore → Delhi / Overnight Journey
Group departure from Indore according to the selected transport plan.
Meet the group, coordinate with the trip captain, and begin the journey towards North India.
Day 2 — Delhi → Dharamshala → McLeod Ganj
Continue towards Dharamshala by road.
Check into the hotel, freshen up, and keep the first evening intentionally light. Walk around McLeod Ganj market, explore the cafés, and get your first look at the Dhauladhar range.
Overnight in McLeod Ganj.
Day 3 — McLeod Ganj Local Sightseeing
After breakfast:
Tsuglagkhang Complex → Namgyal Monastery → Tibetan market → Bhagsunag Temple → Bhagsu Waterfall → evening café time.
This should not be rushed. The best part of McLeod Ganj is often what happens between the major stops.
Day 4 — Dharamkot & Triund / Naddi
Choose between an active and relaxed day.
Adventure version: Dharamkot → Triund trek → return.
Relaxed version: Dharamkot → Naddi → Dal Lake → sunset viewpoint.
The second option works better for families, corporate groups, or travelers who don't want a physically demanding day.
Day 5 — Tibetan Culture & Dharamshala
Visit the Norbulingka Institute, explore Dharamshala, and include St. John in the Wilderness Church.
Depending on the group's interests and available time, add local shopping and a final Tibetan dinner.
Day 6 — Dharamshala → Delhi → Indore
Check out and begin the return journey.
Depending on the transport plan, the group can reach Delhi and continue towards Indore by the arranged overnight connection.
The exact duration should always be confirmed according to the selected departure, because mountain-road travel doesn't behave like a city timetable.
Explore TravelTech's Himachal Packages for a McLeod Ganj Combination.
At the time of checking, TravelTech does not have a dedicated McLeod Ganj package displayed as a live bookable route. Rather than inventing a “starting from” price, here are the current Himachal packages that can be used as alternatives or starting points for a customized McLeod Ganj extension.
Himachal Explorer—Shimla, Manali, Kangra & Amritsar
Starting from ₹17,999/person
This is the most directly relevant published route because it actually includes the Kangra region. The 9-day itinerary combines Shimla, Manali, Kangra, Dalhousie/Khajjiar, and Amritsar, with hotel stays, listed meals, and a trip captain. A McLeod Ganj extension can be discussed as a custom modification rather than assumed to be included.
Manali–Kasol 5 Nights / 6 Days Strangers Group Trip
Starting from ₹6,999/person
This is designed around the TravelTech community-style group experience, with Manali, Solang/Atal Tunnel–Sissu, Kullu, Kasol and Manikaran. The current listing shows Indore and Bhopal pickup options on selected departures. It is a better fit for travelers who want an energetic Himachal group experience and are open to adding McLeod Ganj separately.
Manali–Kasol–Kheerganga
Starting from ₹8,999/person
This route is built for travelers who want trekking and outdoor adventure rather than primarily cultural sightseeing. It covers Manali, Kasol, Kheerganga, and Manikaran, with overnight stays in hotels/camps and an experienced trip captain on qualifying group sizes.
Manali–Kasol 4 Nights / 5 Days Strangers Trip
Starting from ₹5,999/person
A shorter Himachal group option covering Manali, Kasol, Manikaran, and the Lahaul side, with two hotel nights in Manali and overnight journeys. It works for travellers who want a shorter group holiday and can separately add McLeod Ganj through a customised extension.
For couples, TravelTech also currently lists customized Shimla–Manali and Manali–Kasol honeymoon routes, so McLeod Ganj can be considered as part of a private Himalayan honeymoon itinerary rather than forcing a couple into a stranger-group route.
