How to reach Udaipur from Indore

By road: This is the most popular option. The route goes through Ratlam, Mandsaur, Nimach and Chittorgarh, and the highways are mostly in good condition. Most groups leave Indore in the late evening by tempo traveller or sleeper bus and reach Udaipur early in the morning, which saves a hotel night. If you are driving in daylight, stop at Chittorgarh Fort on the way; our Chittorgarh Fort guide explains what to see.

By train: A few trains connect Indore and Ratlam to Udaipur City station, but timings are limited, so check before you plan.

By flight: Udaipur's Maharana Pratap Airport has connections from major cities, but from Indore you will usually need one stop, which makes road the better choice for a short trip.

Day 1: Udaipur, lakes and palaces

Reach Udaipur early, check in, freshen up and have breakfast. Start with the City Palace, a huge palace complex built over several centuries, with courtyards, balconies and museum rooms full of history. Day 3: Udaipur to Mount Abu

After breakfast, drive to Mount Abu, Rajasthan's only hill station, at around 1,200 metres in the Aravalli range. The air cools as the road climbs. After lunch, visit the Dilwara Jain temples, famous for some of the most detailed marble carving in India, built between the 11th and 13th centuries. Photography is not allowed inside, and visiting hours for tourists are usually limited to the afternoon, so plan accordingly. In the evening, take a boat ride on Nakki Lake and watch the sunset from Sunset Point. Dinner at the hotel. Overnight in Mount Abu.
