A complete 6-day Meghalaya trip plan from Guwahati: Shillong, Laitlum, Cherrapunji, the double-decker root bridge trek, Dawki and Mawlynnong, with costs, best time and tips.

Quick answer: The ideal Meghalaya trip plan is 5 to 6 days starting and ending in Guwahati: Shillong for the city and Laitlum canyons, Cherrapunji (Sohra) for the double-decker living root bridge and Nohkalikai Falls, and Dawki with Mawlynnong for the crystal-clear Umngot river and Asia's "cleanest village". November to April is best for clear water and trekking, while June to September is best for waterfalls. A Meghalaya group trip costs from about ₹19,000 per person ex-Guwahati, plus flights.

Meghalaya feels like a different country. Clouds roll through the valleys at eye level, rivers are so clear that boats look like they are floating in the air, and bridges are not built but grown, from the roots of living trees, over hundreds of years. It is one of the most beautiful states in India and still one of the least visited by travellers from Central India.

That is starting to change. Meghalaya is now one of the most requested trips from our travellers in Indore and Bhopal, and this guide is the plan we use for our groups: how to get there, how many days you need, the day-wise route, the cost and the things nobody tells you before your first trip.

How to reach Meghalaya from Indore and Bhopal

The gateway to Meghalaya is Guwahati in Assam. Flights from Indore and Bhopal to Guwahati usually have one stop, often via Delhi, Kolkata, Mumbai or Bengaluru. Shillong, the capital of Meghalaya, is around 100 kilometres from Guwahati airport, about a 3-hour drive through the hills. Shillong airport has very limited flights, so almost every group trip starts and ends in Guwahati.

Trains run from Madhya Pradesh to Guwahati, but the journey takes well over a day, so most working travellers fly.

6-day Meghalaya trip plan

Day 1: Guwahati to Shillong

Land in Guwahati and meet the group and Trip Captain at the airport. On the drive up to Shillong, stop at Umiam Lake, a huge blue reservoir surrounded by pine-covered hills. In the evening, walk around Police Bazaar, try momos and local tea, and settle in. Dinner at the hotel. Overnight in Shillong.

Day 2: Shillong to Cherrapunji

Start with Laitlum Canyons, where the land drops into deep green valleys with tiny villages at the bottom. It is one of the best viewpoints in the Northeast. Then drive to Cherrapunji, also called Sohra, once famous as one of the wettest places on Earth. On the way, see Elephant Falls and the Seven Sisters Falls if there has been rain. In the afternoon, visit Nohkalikai Falls, one of the tallest plunge waterfalls in India, and the Mawsmai limestone caves. Overnight in Cherrapunji.

Day 3: Double-decker living root bridge trek

The big day. The trek down to Nongriat village and the double-decker living root bridge involves around 3,000 to 3,500 stone steps down, and the same back up. It takes about 5 to 6 hours return with breaks, and you will feel it in your legs the next day. At the bottom, the root bridge, grown over many years by the Khasi people from the roots of rubber fig trees, is worth every step. Swim in the natural blue pools near Rainbow Falls if you have the energy. Overnight in Cherrapunji.

Day 4: Cherrapunji to Mawlynnong and Dawki

Drive to Mawlynnong, often called Asia's cleanest village, with bamboo dustbins on every lane and flowers outside every house. See the single-decker root bridge at Riwai nearby. Continue to Dawki on the India–Bangladesh border. If the water is clear, take a boat ride on the Umngot river, where the riverbed is visible through several metres of water. Overnight at a riverside camp in Shnongpdeng or back in Shillong, depending on the itinerary.

Day 5: Shnongpdeng and back to Shillong

Morning at Shnongpdeng for kayaking, cliff jumping or just sitting by the river. Drive back to Shillong in the afternoon. Your last evening is a good time for Shillong's café scene and live music, which the city is famous for. Overnight in Shillong.

Day 6: Shillong to Guwahati

After breakfast, drive back to Guwahati. If you have time before your flight, visit Kamakhya Temple or the Brahmaputra riverfront.

Adding Kaziranga to your Meghalaya trip

If you have two extra days, add Kaziranga National Park in Assam, about 4 to 5 hours from Guwahati. Kaziranga is home to the largest population of one-horned rhinos in the world, and a morning jeep safari through its grasslands is one of the best wildlife experiences in India. The park usually opens for safaris from around November to April and closes during the monsoon floods, so check dates before you plan.

A combined Meghalaya and Kaziranga trip runs 7 to 8 days. The order that works best is Guwahati, then Kaziranga for two nights, then back through Guwahati to Shillong, Cherrapunji and Dawki. Our Meghalaya with Kaziranga trip follows this route, so you do not have to plan the long drives yourself. Carry neutral-coloured clothes for the safari and a pair of binoculars if you have one. Elephants, wild buffalo, swamp deer and many birds are common sightings, and with luck you may spot a tiger.

Season

Months

What to expect

Autumn and winter

October–February

Clear skies, Umngot river at its clearest, cool weather, best for treks

Spring

March–May

Pleasant, green, occasional showers

Monsoon

June–September

Waterfalls at full power, heavy rain, slippery treks, river not clear

If the clear river at Dawki is your main reason to go, plan between November and March. If you want roaring waterfalls and do not mind getting wet, go in the monsoon.

What to eat in Meghalaya

Khasi food is simple, smoky and delicious. Try jadoh (rice cooked with meat or vegetables), dohneiiong (pork with black sesame), tungrymbai (fermented soybean) and fresh momos everywhere. Vegetarians will find enough options in Shillong, but carry some snacks for remote village days. Do not miss a cup of local tea with Khasi snacks at a roadside stall.

Things nobody tells you before a Meghalaya trip

  1. Sunset is early. In winter it gets dark around 5 pm, so plan treks and drives to finish in daylight.

  2. The root bridge trek is real exercise. If you have knee problems, consider the shorter Riwai single-decker bridge instead.

  3. Dawki is not always clear. After heavy rain the river turns muddy. Winter is the safest bet.

  4. Cash matters. Villages and small homestays may not take cards or UPI, and ATMs are limited outside Shillong.

  5. Respect local customs. Many villages charge a small entry or cleanliness fee, and some places do not allow drones or photography of people without asking.

  6. Carry a rain jacket in every season. Meghalaya can rain any time.

What to pack for Meghalaya

  • Good trekking shoes with grip for wet steps

  • A light rain jacket or poncho and a small umbrella

  • A warm layer for Shillong evenings in winter

  • Quick-dry clothes and a swimsuit for the natural pools

  • Mosquito repellent, basic medicines and a power bank

  • A small dry bag to protect your phone near waterfalls

Is Meghalaya safe for a group trip and for girls?

Yes. Meghalaya is generally considered one of the safest and friendliest states in India for travellers, including women, and Khasi society is matrilineal, with property and family names passed down through women. On TravelTech trips, girls share rooms only with girls, the Trip Captain accompanies the group on the root bridge trek, and our ground team plans drives around weather and daylight. If you are joining alone, read our guide on strangers trips in India and solo trips for girls.

Meghalaya vs other mountain trips

Meghalaya is very different from Himachal or Uttarakhand. The hills are lower, around 1,500 metres in Shillong, so there is no altitude stress, and the landscape is green, wet and full of water rather than snow peaks. If you have already done Manali and want something new, Meghalaya is the perfect next trip. For a snow trip instead, see our winter Spiti Valley guide or the Manali trip from Indore guide.
