Manali or Kashmir for snow this winter? Compare snow reliability, cost, travel from Delhi, Mumbai and Bengaluru, activities, vibe and the best pick for your group.

Quick answer: Choose Kashmir if guaranteed deep snow is your top priority: Gulmarg usually has reliable snow from late December to February, plus the gondola, skiing and Dal Lake houseboats. Choose Manali if you want a cheaper, road-based trip from Delhi with snow at Solang Valley and Sissu, cosy cafés and Kasol nearby. A 5-day Manali group trip from Delhi usually costs ₹8,000 to ₹15,000, while Kashmir costs about ₹15,000 to ₹30,000 without flights. Many travellers do Manali first and save Kashmir for their second snow trip.

Every winter, millions of Indians search for the same thing: where can I see real snow this year? The answer almost always comes down to two places, Manali and Kashmir. Both are beautiful, both get snow, and both are packed with travellers from Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Pune, Hyderabad, Indore and Bhopal. But they are very different trips in cost, travel time, snow reliability and vibe. This guide compares them side by side so your group can decide in one call.

Snow: which place gives you the best chance?

This is the most important question, so let us be honest. Kashmir wins on snow. Gulmarg sits higher and gets heavy, reliable snow every winter, especially in January. Even when Srinagar is clear, Gulmarg is usually white. Pahalgam's Betaab and Aru valleys also look magical in winter when the roads are open.

Manali is more variable. Manali town may or may not have snow on your dates, especially in December. But Solang Valley, about 14 km away, usually gets snow by late December, and the Atal Tunnel takes you to Sissu in Lahaul, where snow is far more dependable in winter. So you will almost always see snow on a Manali trip; you just might need to drive to it.

Getting there from different cities

From Delhi, Manali is a classic overnight Volvo ride, which makes it cheap and easy for a long weekend. Kashmir is a short flight from Delhi, and the newer Katra to Srinagar rail line is another option. From Mumbai, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Chennai or Pune, both trips usually start with a flight. For Manali, you fly to Delhi or Chandigarh and continue by road; for Kashmir, you fly straight to Srinagar with one stop. TravelTech’s Manali–Kasol group trips pick up from Delhi and Chandigarh, with a Friday departure from Delhi. Travellers from Mumbai, Pune, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, South India and Central India reach Delhi a day earlier by train or flight. Kashmir is best reached by flight via Delhi.

Local transport.

₹2,000 to ₹4,000.

₹4,000 to ₹7,000.

Snow activities.

₹1,000 to ₹3,500.

₹3,500 to ₹7,500 including gondola.

Food.

₹2,000 to ₹3,500.

₹3,000 to ₹5,000.

The biggest difference is getting there. Manali by bus is much cheaper than flying to Srinagar, especially around Christmas and New Year when flight fares spike. Group trips bring both costs down because rooms and vehicles are shared.

Vibe and travel style

Manali feels young and social. The cafés are full of backpackers and college groups, evenings revolve around bonfires and music, and the Parvati Valley adds a laid-back hippie charm. It is perfect if you want a fun trip with friends or want to meet new people on a group trip.

Kashmir feels like a postcard. Houseboats, chinar trees, quiet snowfields and steaming cups of kahwa create a calmer, more romantic mood. It is ideal for couples, families and anyone who wants the snow itself to be the main event rather than the nightlife.

Weather and comfort

Both places get very cold in January, with night temperatures well below freezing at the snow points. Kashmir's cold during Chillai Kalan is sharper and lasts longer, and power cuts can happen in heavy snow, so heated rooms matter. Manali's hotels and cafés are used to winter crowds, but roads near Solang and Sissu can close briefly after fresh snowfall. In both, dress in layers, carry a power bank and keep a buffer day.

Practical things that can affect your trip

  • Mobile networks: Prepaid SIMs from other states usually do not work in Jammu and Kashmir; postpaid generally does. Manali has no such restriction.

  • Road closures: Heavy snow can briefly close roads in both places. Stay flexible.

  • Peak pricing: Both get expensive between 20 December and 5 January. Book early.

  • Gondola tickets: In Gulmarg, book online in advance during peak season.

Food and stays

In Manali, stays range from budget hostels and homestays in Old Manali to riverside hotels and resorts along the Beas. Food is a mix of Himachali dishes like siddu and trout, Tibetan momos and thukpa, and the café menus of Old Manali and Kasol with pizzas, pastas and Israeli dishes. Vegetarians have plenty of options everywhere.

In Srinagar, the classic stay is a houseboat on Dal Lake or Nigeen Lake, usually for one or two nights, with hotels for the rest of the trip. Gulmarg has a limited number of hotels, which fill quickly in peak weeks, so book early. Kashmiri food is famous for the wazwan feast, rich meat dishes like rogan josh and yakhni, and vegetarian staples such as dum aloo, nadru (lotus stem) and haak saag. Kahwa, the saffron-and-almond green tea, keeps you warm on cold evenings.

Packing list for either trip

  • Thermal inner layers, top and bottom.

  • A fleece and a padded waterproof jacket.

  • Waterproof gloves, a woollen cap and a neck warmer.

  • Snow boots or shoes with a strong grip, which can also be rented at snow points.

  • Woollen socks, several pairs.

  • Sunglasses, sunscreen and lip balm for snow glare.

  • A power bank and a small torch.

  • ID cards and printed bookings.

Layering is the secret. You will move between heated rooms, cold buses and snowfields all day, and it is easier to remove a layer than to shiver without one.

Is a group trip better for a winter snow holiday?

For most first-timers, yes. Winter trips involve snow-chain cabs, gondola bookings, sudden road closures and changing plans. A Trip Captain who has handled these situations many times makes the difference between a stressful trip and a fun one. Group pricing also cuts the cost of cabs and rooms, which matters a lot in peak season. Read how it works in our guide to TravelTech group trips.
