Explore Kerala beyond the usual tourist spots—from Munnar’s misty tea hills to Alleppey’s peaceful backwaters. Plan your perfect Kerala trip with TravelTech’s latest travel guide, itinerary and packages.
Quick answer: A Kerala trip works best over 5–7 days: start in Kochi, spend two nights among Munnar's tea gardens, one night in Thekkady for Periyar and spice plantations, and a night on an Alleppey houseboat, adding Varkala or Kovalam for beaches if you have more time. October to March is the best time to visit, and Kochi is the main airport for the route.
Long before Kerala became a favourite on travel reels, people were already crossing seas to reach its shores.
Around the ancient port of Muziris, merchants traded pepper and other goods with travellers arriving from distant parts of the world. Kerala Tourism records Muziris as an active port as early as the 1st century BCE, with trade links extending towards the Roman, Arab and other trading worlds. Then, in 1341, major changes in the Periyar river system, associated with floods and an earthquake, transformed the region and Muziris disappeared from the world’s major trade map. (Kerala Tourism)
There is something wonderfully appropriate about that history.
Kerala has always been about movement — ships carrying spices, people crossing mountains, boats travelling through backwaters and, today, travellers moving from Kochi to Munnar, Thekkady and Alleppey with a camera in one hand and a cup of tea in the other.
And then there is Munnar.
The hill station’s modern plantation story began in the 19th century. Kerala Tourism records that A.H. Sharp planted tea on about 50 acres in 1880, helping shape the rolling green landscape that has become almost inseparable from the idea of Munnar. (Kerala Tourism)
That mix of history, landscape and everyday life is what makes a Kerala trip so memorable.
You can walk through old streets in Kochi in the morning, breathe cool mountain air in Munnar the next day, hear forest sounds in Thekkady and end the journey floating quietly through Alleppey’s backwaters.
Kerala doesn’t really feel like one destination.
It feels like several different holidays stitched together into one journey
Best Places to Visit on a Kerala Trip
1. Kochi — Where Kerala’s History Meets the Sea
Kochi is often the beginning of a Kerala journey, but it deserves more than a quick airport transfer.
Spend some time around Fort Kochi, where old streets, colonial-era buildings, cafés, churches and the famous Chinese fishing nets create a very different atmosphere from the rest of the state.
The city’s history is closely connected with Kerala’s changing maritime importance. After the transformation of the Periyar system in 1341, Kochi gradually emerged as an important port city. (Kerala Tourism)
If your schedule allows, keep a few hours for Fort Kochi rather than rushing straight towards the hills.
2. Munnar — Tea Gardens, Misty Roads and Mountain Air
Munnar is where the landscape changes dramatically.
The roads climb into the Western Ghats, temperatures drop and the view outside the window slowly turns into layer after layer of tea-covered hills.
Munnar sits at roughly 1,600 metres above sea level and is associated with the meeting of three mountain streams — Muthirapuzha, Nallathanni and Kundala. (Kerala Tourism)
For a first visit, popular experiences include:
● Tea plantations and tea estates
● Tata Tea Museum
● Eravikulam National Park
● Mattupetty Dam
● Echo Point
● Waterfalls around the Munnar route
● Spice plantations
● Local cafés and chocolate shops
Munnar is also one of those places where you don’t need to fill every hour. Leave some time to simply sit somewhere with a hot cup of tea and watch the mist move across the hills.
3. Thekkady — Forests, Wildlife and Spices
The road from Munnar to Thekkady brings another change of scenery.
The tea gardens gradually give way to forests and spice-growing landscapes. The region is known for the Periyar Tiger Reserve, where travellers can experience the forest around Periyar Lake.
A boat experience on the lake is one of the popular ways to explore the area. Depending on conditions and luck, visitors may see elephants, deer, bison and different bird species.
Thekkady is also a good place to experience Kerala’s spice culture — particularly cardamom, pepper and other plantation crops.
4. Alleppey — The Kerala Backwater Experience
If Munnar is Kerala’s mountain chapter, Alleppey is its slowest one.
The famous backwaters stretch through a landscape of coconut palms, paddy fields, canals and villages. A houseboat turns the journey itself into the attraction.
Instead of constantly moving from one sightseeing point to another, you simply sit back.
The boat moves.
Lunch arrives.
The landscape changes slowly.
And for a few hours, nobody is particularly interested in checking the time.
TravelTech’s current 4N/5D group itinerary includes an overnight houseboat stay in Alleppey, with the route moving from Munnar to Thekkady and then into the backwaters. (TravelTech)
5. Varkala — Cliffs, Sea and a Different Side of Kerala
Varkala feels completely different from the mountains and backwaters.
The dramatic cliffside overlooking the Arabian Sea is the defining feature, while the beach below makes it a natural stop for travellers who want some coastal time.
Varkala works particularly well in longer Kerala itineraries where you don’t want the trip to finish after Munnar, Thekkady and Alleppey.
6. Kovalam — For a Relaxed Beach Finish
Kovalam is another popular coastal stop, especially on longer Kerala itineraries.
If your holiday includes Thiruvananthapuram, Kovalam can be combined with city sightseeing and cultural attractions, making it a useful final chapter before departure.
TravelTech’s 6N/7D Kerala Delight itinerary, for example, combines Kochi, Munnar, Thekkady, Alleppey and Kovalam in one route. (TravelTech)
